Bike to Work Week 2014!

Cycling season is upon us and that means it is time to start biking to school and work.  To kick this off National Bike to School day will occur on May 7th and National Bike to Work Day this year will be May 16th.  This year, Julie D. Hunter of the Air Quality Management Division of the Washoe County Health District is organizing events for both weeks and has added many fun new ways to get involved.  The prize money for the “Rack Em Up” bike contest has doubled this year and will be taking place the entire week of May 10th-16th.  This contest encourages kids to bike to school and allows different schools to compete against each other to see who can have the fullest bike rack and the best decorated bike rack.  Judging will be conducted by members of the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and the winners will be announced on May 23rd.

Just like the kids, adults are able to engage in friendly competitions all throughout Bike to Work Week, May 10th-16th.  The Commuter Challenge portion of Bike to Work Week encourages all Truckee Meadows employers and their employees to bike to work all week.  The higher the percentage of participation, the higher your chances of winning bragging rights for a year, and recognition on the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance website.  Businesses who compete are also entered into a drawing for $500 in financial support from the RTC SMART TRIPS to promote bicycle commuting year round.  Individuals can also by registering for Bike to Work Week.  One prize of $500 in gift certificates to a participating bike shop courtesy of the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance will go to one lucky participant and 10 lucky participants will win $50 vouchers for commuter merchandise at participating bike shops courtesy of the RTC SMART TRIPS program.  Throughout the week there will also be events around town with free food, coffee, and even more giveaways!  For more information check out the event schedule.
