AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities 4th Edition Released

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has released the updated 2012, 4th  edition of their Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities. The updated version is greatly expanded from the 1999 release. The planning and design sections have been elaborated to include much more information. The design section has been split into two sections in the new version “Design of On-Road Facilities” and “Design of Shared Use Paths”. Added to the new version are sections on “bicycle operation and safety” and “Maintenance and operations”. The “Bicycle Operation and Safety” section is a great addition to the new version, it highlights contributing causes of bicycle related crashes and offers recommended countermeasures.

Here in the greater Reno area there is a strong movement promoting cycling in the community. Groups, clubs and organizations such as Reno Bike Project are promoting a bike friendly community through education, advocacy and cooperation. With community outreach from motivated individuals and the use of design principles illustrated in the ASSHTO guide by local designers a well connected bike community is very attainable.
